Craft Time

A group of friends and I get together every couple of months to attempt to do something crafty off of Pinterest (or work on our own projects). I've started really looking forward to this event, appropriately labeled Crafternoon. I'm not the most crafty person. I pin a lot of stuff on Pinterest but when it comes to actually doing it, I get overwhelmed. I walk into Michaels or Hobby Lobby and I have no clue where to start. So it's great working on a project together with a group of people. It motivates me to actually buy the components and give it a try.

Today we worked on the DIY Chunky Finger Knit Necklace. It was totally fun and lot easier then expected. I ended up purchasing a cheap neon pink tshirt from Walmart since I recently gave away a lot of my old tshirts to Goodwill. Plus I currently love anything neon and will be more likely to wear it. Finding the brass plumbing couplings was a little harder than expected. Who knew there were so many types of couplings? As you'll see in the pics, we all ended up using different types of couplings but they all looked great. Additionally, I highly recommend getting a good pair of fabric scissors because you will be doing a lot of cutting.

It took a minute to figure out how to actually create the yarn out of the tshirts. The key is the diagonal cut at the end. But now that I know, I want to turn all my tshirts into yarn. The possibilities are endless. I just pinned a pin about creating a rag rug out of tshirt yarn. So cool! Finger knitting was a new concept for me. Apparently I missed this critical childhood activity somehow. Thankfully there are plenty of youtube videos that helped and after a couple of tries, we were well on our way. I even had enough yarn leftover to finger knit a matching bracelet.

This is super easy and pretty quick project. I can see myself doing this many times, playing with the thickness of the yarn, or using chain for part of the necklace, or different accessories instead of the brass plumbing couplings. The options are endless.

My friend took this picture at the start of cutting the tshirts to create into the yarn.

Here's all our yarn lined up.

This is my final product with the matching bracelet. Sorry for the awful instagram photo. It looks much nicer on my phone :) I'll try to take better pictures with my real camera. I loved how chunky it came out. And so neon!
This is my friend's necklace. I like the rustic look.

Blue Bonnets!

It is wild flower season in Texas. This is my favorite time of year because the weather is just perfect. Not too hot, not too cold. The bugs haven't fully come out. And the wild flowers along the sides of the road make for a pretty commute. I'm lucky that my neighborhood decided to plant wildflowers along the walk ways and lakes so I didn't have to make the drive into hill country to take some snaps of these pretty flowers. Blue bonnets are the Texas state flower and very popular to photograph. You'll find people stopped on the side of the roads trying to capture these flowers.  I woke up early one Sunday morning to catch these lovely blooms in the morning light.(Especially before they got trampled on by people doing family portraits. I seriously don't understand smashing flowers to sit your child in the middle of the flower patch. Put the child on the side, the front, or behind. Let the flowers be so others can enjoy them. End Rant!) If you plan to photograph wildflowers, just be careful of your surroundings. Snakes apparently like to hide in the undergrowth. And tons of fire ants. Wear proper shoes and long pants. I was lucky that I was able to lay on a cement sidewalk and take some close ups without rolling the grass. I still came away with 2 bug bites though. All these photos were taken with my Nikon D5100 with a 50mm lens.
